I'm waiting on word about a nursing job offer at the VA in Asheville, I'm having trouble deciding if I'll take it as it would mean a 70 min commute or moving closer to Asheville.
Anyone work at the VA, know anything about it? I could always pass on this job and wait for an opening closer to where I'm at now, but jobs are on the scarce side now, so perhaps I should just rent an apartment in Asheville, take the job and wait for an opening closer to home.
Remember, once you get your foot in the door you can look for a transfer to another VA hospital nearer where you might prefer to live. Or oyu may decide you like it there. If you decide you like Asheville but not the VA then you could always keep an eye out over at Mission, Park, and Haywood for a position. Good luck.
I am also applying for a job at the Asheville VA, I'm a pscyh RN currently living and working in Pittsburgh, PA. Tony, did you hear anything about the job.

Nothing yet, but at least with the VA they are supposed to send you a letter stating either yes or no about the job offer.
How do you like mental health nursing? Good luck on the position.
I worked at the VA in Asheville for 3 years before my financial situation forced me to return to colorado (I could not sell home in CO)...VA pretty good place to work....and federal jobs probably the most secure of anything out there today....scenery is great and really diverse population...great music scene....good luck
I love mental heatlh nursing. Did oncology for over a year before making the switch and I'm very happy I did. Are you in the psych field as well?
I work on a cardiac floor now, I've done an interview for an oncology floor 1st question they asked was how do you handle death and dying. I did clinicals at the VA in Johnson City, TN on their mental health floor, looked interesting, but the psych nurses can be stern.

Thanks,
I know what you mean about not able to sell property, I'm having no luck selling land in TN. Did you transfer to a VA facility in CO?
Tony
