Be v. organized about it. Make very clear house rules (eg., house must be left clean, laundry done, dishes put away, etc.). Set realistic financial cost expectations in advance (eg., heating, water, home improvements). Set aside weeks for your own use in advanced. Meet once a year to discuss how to improve. Does not work when the owners show up whenever they please...it gets crowded....people have different ideas of how to relax...eg., some like to be loud, set off fireworks, bring their dogs and watch movies till all hours of the night, others like to get away from it all, commune w/ nature, etc.

Price range and the kind of people I would want to rent to would be my priority.
Cashiers, NC is a great place. There is a large lake, Glenville, many upscale restaurants and country clubs, just 20 minutes from Highlands, NC which would also be on my list. Ultimately it all depends on your budget. This area is by far the best for appreciation in value though. Some one mentioned Fontana Lake here. It's a great place to visit but not for ownership IMHO. I'm going to get called a snob here, but unless you are into time share ownership you really need to be careful or you will end up with a property that you will lose money on. I'm in real estate and know from what I write.
