My husband and I are moving to Asheville (he is going next week, I move there when our house sells). He has a job in the medical field and I work from home.
Our last kid is off to college later this month so we are empty nesters in our early 40s. Where are some places you can find friends since we virtually know nobody? There is church and clubs but where else in Asheville would those in the 40's go?

We are not a rare and endangered species here. You'll find people. Pursue your interests, get involved in whatever clubs share those interests and you'll find us! We've gained a nice circle of friends that sound very similar to what you describe just by being ourselves.
Read the weekly entertainment newspaper called the Mountain Xpress, they're online and also it can be picked up at libraries and other well-visited places. They have a large listing section of club activities (diff from a standard club), which includes every kind of art people imaginable, hikers, gardeners, and so forth. They also list a wide range of activities to participate in, organized calendar-wise or according to whether it's music or dancing or whatever. In this manner, you can attend events that other people who share your interests will be at. If you want to meet people and do fun stuff together, there are endless opportunities in Asheville, and that paper is one way to find out what's going on around here.
Just remembered another one. Get involved in one of the coops. You get to dig in their gardens and get reduced rates on the produce. along the way you'll meet lots of other folks--assuming you're interested in gardening.
