My idea of backpacking is simple, I'd like to go to the woods for a few days and stay away from campgrounds overfilled with car campers. I'd rather go stealth camping, than stay in any of those camp sites (but some backpacking sites spread far and away from each other might be ok).

So, I wonder if anyone just want to go backpacking with me?
Or if anyone does backpacking regularly, I would like to know where it can be done?

Chequamegon National Forest has some nice trails, used as snowmobile trails in the winter, that offer a lot of opportunity to be far from people. Check out the section between Lac Du Flambeau and Fifield south of Hwy 70 for potential spots. A few primitive campgrounds remain, primarily north of 70 just west of the LDF reservation boundary.

Personal favorite is Porcupine Mountains in the U.P. where you can hike along the shore of Lake Superior and through the mountains back to Lake of the Clouds. One of the most beautiful spots in the midwest as far as I am concerned.

I go hiking on the Ice Age Trail frequently, I'm currently working on the northern unit in Kettle Moraine. There is a shelter near Mauthe Lake on the trail, you can park on Division Rd & hike in to it, it's not too far from the road but far enough that you won't here traffic. Although the road itself is not a main road at all so I wouldn't worry too much about that. The shelter is pretty solid, no door but the shelter itself is deep. There is an outhouse in the back & it has a firepit. I think there are a few utensils that people keep there, just like hot dog sticks but it's a good place off the beaten path. You do have to get a permit though. I'm not for sure where you get them, maybe call Mauthe Lake & they could give you information. That is, if you're looking for a place closer to Milwaukee.

Check out Sylvania Wilderness area on the Michigan/Wisconsin border. It's not huge, but has a lower visitation rate than the Porkies.
