I never understood this sentiment when I heard it living in Wisconsin. The state really really needed and needs the I influx of tourism money.

Yeah, you and 80 million other Chicagoans who own or rent cabins up in lake country and turn 39/51 into a 200-mile trailer-towing bumper-to-bumper free-for-all every holiday weekend.

I remember the first time going skiing in the UP, thinking it will be an easy drive 94-39/51 in the middle of Feb, boy was I wrong. Nut to butt traffic all the way until Woodruff, that's when I realized holy schitt, there's a lot more people that go up north than I ever thought. About 70% were IL plates from what I could see.

Yes, its horrible in terms of the traffic, things thin out once you go miles off county roads off 51 in Vilas County. Traffic is often bad until you get north of the junction of Hwy 70/51 at Arbor Vitae.

Traffic is signs of economic activity - a good (great!!) thing.

For commercial areas that's to be expected, not if you want peace and quiet for a residential property obviously, I would only buy near the letter highways in Vilas County, never near the numbered highways.

But Mom & Pop shops usually employ only Mom & Pop.

The Lake Geneva AREA has a lot to recommend it. John McGovern's Around the Corner show on PBS on L. Geneva illustrates this, but now it's paywalled-- used to be free to watch online, those mercenary @#$%.

This summer I spent a lot of time at Silver lake. It's a great little lake with lots of boating, tubing and skiing. And the beach was also great. Kids can walk out hundreds of feet without it getting deep. I paid 30 bucks for a season pass so it was well worth it. It was busy but not Lake Geneva Busy.

I always took the kids to Silver lake when we lived in Wisconsin. Such a great little lake.

Back in the early 70's I had a friend that went to live with his dad who had a home above the lake in Fontana. We had some great weekends there back then. But now it's gotten so dang commercialized it's lost its charm. Lake Geneva even more so. I think those from the Southern border are causing much the same to occur up in Door County now which sure is a sad development. Oh well. Some people think it's wonderful. Not me
