The Driftless area is basically the western half of the state. So when your in Baraboo, Sping Green, Platteville, La Crosse, Prairie du Chien etc. Your in the driftless area. It is really a pretty area. If you want you can use a search engine to find out exactly how it happened. The driftless area also encompasses NW Illinois, Extreme NE of Iowa and Extreme SE of Minnesota. Wisconsin has the most land in the driftless area.

The Driftless zone is that portion of the upper Midwest that was not scraped flat by glaciers so there are lots of nice rolling hills. It covers portions of Iowa, Minnesota, Wsconsin (the SW portion of WI specifically) and a very small chunk of the NW corner of Illinois. In Wisconsin, the eastern edge of the Driftless Zone pretty much follows I-94. Check out this map and it should be pretty clear which portion of Wisconsin is part of the Driftless zone.

Thanks for the map! When I drove to Iowa recently the views were great, clear day and you could see for miles.

thanks for the help on the DA... yeah, that's probably the most underrated area of Wisc. for me. I've been through there on my way to Wayalusing state park, gorgeous area and so "un-Wisconsin" like - at least for the rest of the state. I'm sure many who've never been through there have no idea parts of Wisconsin look like that.

Well, there are some rather popular tourist destinations on the eastern edge of the driftless area like Wisconsin Dells, Devil's Lake and Baraboo. So I don't think the "driftless area" concept of rolling hills and bluffs is terribly foreign to most Wisconsinites.
