I'm running road tires as well. I've actually done plenty of trail riding in the past on narrower road tires but I've switch over to 26" road tires exclusively now as it's easier to get a bike to fit me properly when using smaller diameter wheels.
I've never done 40+ mph on the flats on any bike, though I can see it on the tandem with a good tailwind. Downhill? Sure - topped out at about 52mph (though we'd have been able to cruise at 55 easily on the tandem on our way down from Mt St Helens if not for the wicked headwind that had sprung up - still did around 45mph for close to 10 miles without turning the cranks

What are Scott bars? Do you mean aero bars/tri bars?
Scott bars are where you put your forearms facing each other and hunch down for less resistance. They're pretty cool, but you have to be careful.

We went down to Milwaukee for the weekend. We visited the zoo and watched the Brewers play Saturday night. Sunday we went to German Fest along the Lake. Milwaukee is a really fun town.

Not serious swimming, just a quick dip in the lake. I found a great beach north of Point Beach State Forest, run by the Manitowoc County School District, has a little parking area and a path down to the lake. Its free, just a sign with usual restrictions, glass containers, safety, etc.
