Okay, so it's only 5 days of work (2 rehearsals & 3 performances), and doesn't pay a whole lot ($150 for the entire gig) - but hey, it's something!
In case you don't know, I play semi-professional classical viola... earlier tonight I got this urgent/desperate job posting via our private listserv, which is for chamber musicians of northern CA. It's a holiday choir concert with string quartet accompaniment, and their violist backed out at the last minute. I emailed back saying I was available, and later spoke with the music director on the phone about the details. Should be fun, and I'm hoping it leads to more gigs... network, network, network - right? Especially with the holidays being so close, as this is the BEST time of year for musicians! I'm not a big fan of holiday/Christmas stuff, but always happy to be paid for playing any kind of music.
Is anyone else here a musician, and if so do you ever get paying gigs? How do you advertise yourself or your group? I once dreamed of doing this for a living, but it's such an erratic source of money - and I like knowing what I'm doing (and how much I'm earning) from week to week. Still a dream of mine, though, so maybe it's time to pursue that further... wedding gigs are always plentiful, and I'd love to form a regular quartet for those.
Japanese engineers are perfecting a new chip that will soon render musicians completely obsolete. This new chip can write music, perform it, and even distribute it with 100% anti-pirate channeling.

Yes, but can this chip play music with heart & feeling? Can it move me to tears, the way Itzhak Perlman did when I saw him perform live? Until robotics are capable of such a thing, I'm not too worried...
Congrats, gizmo! My brother also plays drums for a band and now he plays every week-end. It's gotten him back to playing music and giving him extra money.

People will play these chips at home but the chips will never replace the thrill and excitement when you actually see the performer.
