What would you do in my position? Currently I'm in an IT position in a big company with a corporate environment. We have great benefits, great 401k matching and 4 weeks of vacation. My manager is nice and I enjoy working with the rest of the team. I have been here almost a year.

Just today, I got an offer for another IT position in basically the same type of corporate environment (at least by appearance). The 401k matching isn't as great and only 3 weeks of vacation. However, there is a salary increase of 12k.

Do you think it's worth switching jobs? I'm comfortable where I am especially given that I have learned most of the systems I work with. The new job will be a lot more stressful initially since I have to start from scratch. Everything from the work environment to the people I will work with are unknowns. I know money isn't everything and honestly 12k isn't that much but still, I'm finding the new offer a bit hard to pass up.

Tough call. Personally, I'd go with the place I would be the happiest at. If you are making a decent living and work with good people, why leave? If you do want to move on at some point, I think it is better to have a few years under your belt. That helps you from getting a reputation as a job hopper.

I probably wouldn't. 12K d/n = an extra 12 K once you consider taxes. That wouldn't be enough compensation to convince me to leave a place I like and give up a week of vacation.

I dunno dude. 12k is a pretty decent amount.
I mean u get one week less vacation, not as good of a 401K. I imagine after taxes and everything the 12K will prob be more like 9K cold hard cash increase?

How bad do u need the extra money? It depends on ur situation I guess.
If it were me I would go for it, but thats just me. I tend to jump ship at a better opportunity because I always wonder to myself "what would it have been like?" "maybe I passed up an amazing opportunity? etc" I always question myself for not taking risks and opportunities, but thats just me.

U get one life to live. Either stick with the status quo, or shake things up? ya know.... whats ur schtick? whats ur personality? how bad do u need the money? Ask urself those questions and than decided.

btw, thats a good "dilema" to be in.

Is there room in your current company to grow? How far off would a pay increase of $12k be at your current job?

I started a new position about two months ago, so I fully understand how stressful it can be. My preference would be to stay where I'm happiest at, but only if there is room for me to achieve what I would like to achieve professionally.

In my consideration, I would put a heavier emphasis on happiness and which employer provides more room for upward mobility. If you current employer does, I would just stay there.

That 12K is not just 12K, it is 12K every year.

Sure taxes will ding ya, unless you put more into your 401k, IRA's, etc.

Depends on your tax bracket. I can tell you when I got a 14k increase I did not get 10k hold card cash.. at all. It was really eaten in taxes.

I wouldn't give up the better 401k, extra week vacation and the real enjoyment of working with people I like for 12k. Not worth it. 24k.. okay.. sure. 12k? no

12k with the same benefits and people I really enjoy and an interesting project? Definitely.

Keep in mind-- money is usually the biggest dissatisfier when people are already UNHAPPY.

Money is never the biggest satisfier for happiness in a job.

this is why forums are good, because one can get differing opinions and have points brought up that one would not otherwise think about.

good one, mate, I like that comment.

You know Optimus when I used to read that in Org Behavior textbooks and in business classes-- I used to think they were full of Shat.

However about 5 years ago, I had the occasion to get a job I REALLY REALLY loved. Truly. And I worked some MEAN hours, but I was having a load of fun. It was so inspiring to see an application/service go live, have to get it stable, and the natural adrenaline that came with all of that. Management was beyond wonderful to us-- also working as many long hours. I got paid around 36k at the time with some overtime.

Fast forward to the same group with new leadership (we were acquired under the leadership of another organization). I LOATHED my job. And I realized I had become obsessed with thinking how much I was not getting paid-- and this was after a 10k raise and some really nice annual bonuses.

I moved to my present job a year ago-- my salary is great-- but I would do this job even at the lower rate. The people, the job itself is what gives me that warm feeling. Even when I got a nice big raise at my annual review, it was kind of a.. oh okay cool.. thanks versus... I needed that!

That $1,000 a month translates to about $600 a month take home, maybe less, depending on your tax bracket. If the new place makes you pay more for health insurance, subtract that out, too. Plus, you can subtract out any difference in 401K, because in the long run, you will be losing money at the new place.

Is the difference worth giving up a week's vacation, work you enjoy, and, most importantly, people you like working with? Only you can decide, but were I in your shoes I'd stay put. These days it is so incredibly rare for people to be in situations where they like all three--benefits, work, people--that I wouldn't trade the angel that I do know for the devil that I don't. Just my opinion.
