To say that a temp is messy and does not put "100%" in his/her job is sickening. After reading your post and the replies that followed, it may have upset me even more. I Have been a temp at the same job for a little over two years. During that time I have seen full time employees leave and never been replaced. When I say full time I mean hired on employees. (where I work temps work 40+ a week) I have just discovered that all my hours worked and hard earned vacation/holiday pay is being zeroed out. Which means back to zero hours, that's right, no holiday pay, no vaction, and will not be able to take the little vacation that I have earned. The sad part is that the employees with the worst attitudes are the hired on employees. Because making 5 to 6 dollars more a hour along with 4 weeks vacation and annual raises is just so hard. If I could run my mouth I would, but my soul keeps me civil.

I'm temping at a Fortune 50 corporation right now, and after reading this thread I'm a little skeptical of my future. At the time of interview, I've been told my position could be turned into a perm position depending on the openings.

Most, if not all, of the permanent employees in my department started off as temps, and have been made perm anywhere from within 6 weeks to 2 years.

What should I do?

My pay is also crap. I'm getting paid nearly 50% of what the permanent employees are making, and they're not even letting me work full time. I can only work 4 days of the week. This is an entry level finance position.

I also worked for an F500 company as temp. They love to hire everyone as a temp and use the possibility of going perm as a carrot. In my experience it doesn't happen. Keep looking for a new job the entire time you are there. Interview every chance you get and don't believe a thing the company tells you.

Also look at the other temps. Have they been made perm?

Right on. I was actually one of those temps with the "perm" carrot working for a F500 in the early 90s when I graduated college. I also learned the hard way that it never goes perm. Permanent jobs are reserved for cronies and nepotists, or other elite Gatsbies.

Many companies only interview and hire the person...so they're telling us they can't tell if the person is hirable after 3 months? Sounds like stupidity.

This.
