Tell me why someone wouldn't take all of his/her vacation days?

I have this co-worker of mine who has only taken around half his vacation days the last few years. He's pretty old, single, seems to have a lot money so I don't think it's fear of being fired that prevents him from taking all his vacation days.

He was working for free, right? Dumb.

My first few years working my first post college job I didn't take all my vacation days and my co-workers didn't understand either.

For me, I had 20 some PTO days to take. My boyfriend at the time, as well as all my friends still worked nights and weekends so I was the only one home during the week and at night with free time. On days off, I literally had nothing to do. Everybody else was at work and I wasn't independent enough then to do things on my own. I also didn't have many hobbies then besides wasting time on the internet. I also didn't travel since I had no one to travel with me so the first few years I had like 10 days or so left that I didn't take because I couldn't see just sitting home watching TV all day for days on end. It was actually depressing.

Now that is not an issue. I take ALL my days and my personal and social life is much busier. But back then days off meant sitting home alone, bored and lonely.

Cmon really? You do know most employers recognize this and also keep this in mind and reward this behavior.

Why are you concerned with your co-workers personal life? Get back to work...

Almost all your time spent awake is at work, so if you think of it as work, and not life...Then ya, you should vacation often as you can.

You make a good point. This dude doesn't seem to have any real hobbies as far as I can tell. I'm not Mr. Excitement or anything, but there are so many things to do on a workday that are better than work. Hell, sleeping is better.

It's a small company, and the person could be an essential part of the daily operation and heavily relied on by thier boss. So the guilt of losing prestige, thier job because of lost revenue, etc.

Why would he be working for free? Your employer pays you when you work don't they? He was at work.

As far as using them or not could he be banking his time or cashing out his time? We do that hear. We are allowed to cash out 80 hours a year and their are 4 times a year that we can cash out time. A lot of people do this.

First, we are not allowed to cash them out unless you leave the company.

Second, how is he not working for free? He gets paid to work say 230 work days per year. If instead he works 240, he just worked 10 extra days at the same salary and bonus. If he had a job that paid more for working more, then yeah, he wouldn't be working for free, but that is not the case here.

To make it even worse for him, our department is very good as far as people taking their allocated vacation goes. It is not frowned upon in the least to do so.

Also, during this time, I was still living at home with my parents, so staying home meant not only sitting around but sitting around with my parents.
