So yesterday at the end of my shift cashiering at the dollar store, we all counted our cash registers. For some reason, mine was $100 short. I really couldn't believe it. Another cashier used my cash while I was on break and even still had my cashier code on while using it. I forgot to take it off. Maybe it was her
My next shift is in 2 days and I have no idea what's going to happen. Am I going to get fired?? It's seriously not fair. I have never lost that amount of money... There's no proof it was my fault. Any other cashiers or former cashiers here know what could happen?

Yeah they do. I didn't take the money and put it in my pockets, so if they can tell that, what else can verify? I know that I didn't give out $100 extra change...
The camera will tell if anybody was stealing so it will clear your name. They can also pull up every transaction made on that register and somehow maybe figure out why the 100 dollars are missing.
Everybody makes mistakes.

Everybody makes mistakes but $100 is a BIG mistake. First, a cashier should never relinquish control of their register for any reason. That register is YOUR responsibility during your shift. If you have to leave your station for any reason the register should be locked. If management is allowing another cashier to step in and run the register while someone is on a break then they're guilty of poor procedures.
Cameras don't catch everything and neither do register tapes. You can't say that you absolutely didn't inadvertently pass the $100 bill to a customer in change. It might have been mixed in with the 1s. Did you and your supervisor both go over the tape and the money several times before you clocked out?
It's not likely you'll be fired for a first mistake but it's not impossible either, especially since you've had a problem getting up to speed on your transactions. One thing which is almost a given is that, unless that $100 is found, it's going to come out of your pay check.
You should see where i work...lol...we are at least 10 people on one register on a given day. If the register is short their is no telling who gave back the wrong change, who was stealing etc. I know 100 bucks is alot. Maybe that other person using the register did it.
In some places you would be fired for keeping your code on the register, let alone the $100. Policies like that are in place for everyone's benefit.
