Can an employer discriminate based on looks ? I mean you hear about age / sex discrimination all the time..This is respect to the TV news industry.
It seems that nowadays networks will are more concerned with appearance over content or intellect.

Officially, no. Unofficialy, yes.

Good luck trying to officially prove that you weren't hired based on the way you look, though. Unless you have a memo, email or some other verification in writing, you won't be able to prove a damn thing.

Even if you can prove it, it means nothing. As stated above, looks is not a federally protected class (don't know if any states have made it a protected class).

The have to walk a fine line. Looks are not a protected class, but age is. So, let's say the 60 year old anchor lady was let go because she is not "good looking" enough anymore. She may find the incident actionable based on her age. The 35 year old replaced by the 22 year old doesn't have the same luxury. Of course anyone can sue anybody for anything, but whether they win or not is another matter.

Daily Kos: Looks discrimination can lower your income, but lack of money can cause looks discrimination, too

I have a decent job, always have and I am butt ugly.

I'm so ugly that when I walk by the restrooms all the toilets flush.
I'm so ugly that when I went for my proctology exam, the doctor stuck his finger in my mouth.
I'm so ugly that when I was a kid playing in the sandbox, the cat buried me.

For what its worth, I'm pretty ugly myself. I'm also balding. If I were a hiring manager, I wouldn't hire me based on my looks.
