I just started my job after graduating from college recently. They gave me a raise after I finished my 90 day introductory period based on performance. I've been working there for about 7 months now, and will probably get new job title and salary adjustment based on new job duties I'm being given over the next month or two. So I've been very fortunate this year.

No raise this year and since our contribution toward the retirement fund was increased, it seems like I took a pay cut.

I said yes, because I got my annual raise of 25 cents an hour in July.

Only managers get a bonus in my company, so I won't be getting one of those.

We just got handed ours today... a cellophane bag w/a 3 inch long stubby pen w/4 different colors of ink... we are all so appreciative considering the o/t and bs we have put up with all year...

I haven't had a bonus since moving to Florida-yes I'm bitter...

For the people who did get nice raises and bonuses may I ask what you do for a living??? My goal is to change careers-which means possibly going back to school-I'm sick of being worked to death

I am a product manager for a HRIS software application.

My skill set is primarily in product management, business systems analysis, project management (although not my core), and operations process improvements.

Haven't seen a raise or step increase in 4 years. Last time my salary changed was May 2009 when my employer TOOK 1% and has yet to return it.

Is it typical for the employer to deduct payroll taxes out of a bonus check?

I am not sure what you mean exactly.

But bonuses are taxed at Supplemental earnings tax rates which is higher than normal W4 tax rates.

You will ALWAYS be taxed on any "income" or earnings that will show up on your paycheck. Even if a company says that they will ensure you get a 10k check it means that they have "grossed up" the bonus to ensure after taxes you get 10k. But the taxes will ALWAYS be there unless you file to be exempt from taxes on your W4 form.

Check on both for this year. I will say however that I tend to look for ways to take on more responsibilities, and then wait it out a while and go up to the boss or president and make my case with a $ figure. We've been able to meet somewhere in the middle in most cases. I've found most people don't ask or make their case, in which case the company is fine with that since you cost less. It's not guaranteed, but making a proper case showing value is hard to argue if you truly are confident you did create more $ on the bottom line. Having figures and empirical data to present are a must.

You answered what I was getting at. This is the first company I?e been at that paid bonuses by check, previously I've been handed cash. Thanks for your input.

I got a raise about two months ago, a merit increase, I was pretty surprised by that, considering supposedly how tight my company is being with money. I am also suppose to receive one early next year as well for my yearly review. So I am pretty fortunate, because many people here have not received anything for a few years.
