How many PTO (Paid days off, including vacation/sick days/holidays) do you get from your work?
In all developed nations, the federal government mandate paid days off to all employees except in the U.S., where there is no law whether a company must provide any paid or unpaid days off at all.
I've rarely worked at a job where more than two weeks of paid, combined sick and vacation leave were granted. I've worked in the private sector for small- to medium-sized companies. In one instance, I received comp time whenever I worked more than 40 hours a week — now, that was really cool.
Some corporate jobs do offer more, if the person is in a position of seniority and has been there for years. My S.O., for example, gets six weeks off every year.
My employer does it a bit differently... the best I've ever had it on a job.
You get the full benefit PTO package IF you are a full time employee on January 1st. There is no "working 2 years to get 2 weeks off" or any of that like you see with a lot of other employers. I was hired permanent on October 17th, 2011 so I got a pro-rated package of 32 vacation hours and 8 sick hours for the remainder of 2011.
On January 1st, 2012 however I got the whole pie... 120 vacation hours and 40 hours sick time for 2012. The only catch is you have to use your vacation time... use it or lose it. There are no rollovers. Sick time can be saved and cashed out at the end of the year though... so that's an extra paycheck on Dec. 31st.
All in all it's a very nice deal... I was only a permanent employee for 2 months when I was given 3 weeks vacation time as well as a week of sick time.
i get 18 days a year of pto as a <1 yr employee. we don't differentiate vacation and sick days. i think you can get up to 30 if you've been at the company for 10 years or more. we also have contests at our annual meeting where we can win up to 5 days of "off the record" pto and we will occasionally get gifted a free day by our divisional president when we meet significant goals.
pto is prob my favorite thing about having a "real" job
Employed less then 2 years = No paid time off
Employed more then 2 years = 1 week paid vacation
Employed more then 3 years = 2 weeks paid vacation
Employed more then 10 years = 3 weeks paid vacation
Employed more then 15 years = 4 weeks paid vacation
4 weeks is the max. You can ask for most weeks during the year but they can refuse you for any reason they want. They do not rollover.
