I will be moving from Oklahoma City to Minneapolis. This is a lateral career move for me with my current employer because it will be a new sales territory, a new living experience, and a closer proximity to my family. I asked to make the move and my employer said yes.
Moving expenses will be paid by employer.
Minneapolis cost of living is 20-25% higher than OKC. My question is this: Even though I requested the move is it acceptable to ask (or even negotiate) a higher salary due to a higher cost of living between the two cities?
I'd just ask about it. Tell the boss you were crunching some numbers and it looks like you will be taking a pretty big pay cut and you were wondering if higher COL areas pay more money (however the time to ask was before you offered to move).
Tricky one. I'm actually surprised they are paying your moving expenses since you requested the transfer. I would try and find a way to "informally" ask about the salary.
