I don't think looks make any difference in professional positions -- like engineering, medicine, law, management, social services, academia, IT, architecture etc. Same with manufacturing and skilled trade positions.

Maybe in sales positions or media someone who is more attractive might have an edge getting hired.

As someone whose been in professional roles for 25+ years, I've observed a definite bias toward attractive people over "average" looking people with respect to symmetry of facial features, hair styles, height, weight, sense of style, straight teeth, etc. But it's been especially observable among certain positions--mainly marketing, sales, and the glamour fields (tv, film, fashion, etc.). There are some exceptions, but for the most part people in these types of positions are usually more attractive than average. But getting back to the OPs question---no, I cannot say I know anyone who is strikingly attractive that has been unemployed for a long time. But my idea of "strikingly attractive" probably differs from everyone on the planet---so, it doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things.

I'm sure there's quite a bit of truth to that, in general. But brains or talent (or conniving-ness) trumps beauty in many cases, too.

I know plenty of attractive people who are unemployed or working less desirable jobs. But it may also be discriminatory. That in itself is another issue. Maybe off topic.

This is probably true for Engineering roles or other positions that don't require a lot of customer face-time. However, if your role is more on the business side and you have to interact regularly with stakeholders (Senior Execs, Customers, Suppliers, Partners, etc), looks play a more important role. I'd consider myself a pretty decent looking guy, but in the past, I've had managers tell me that I need to step up my dress a bit (e.g., slacks instead of khakis), needed to ensure my shirts were pressed, and I needed to trim down (I was probably about 20 lbs above my target weight at the time).

When I read the OP's post, I did not think about fat vs. thin; I thought of attractive vs. unattractive. While being overweight can make one less attractive, there are plenty of in-shape people who are ugly.

I am not talking about attractive people but super good looking people who are just plain beautiful or handsome. Top 5%.

I bet if you took a survey of the people who are in the top 5% of physical attractiveness in America, very few of them are going to be unemployed. What do you think? Is there a link between physical attractiveness and long term unemployment?
The only physically attractive people with long term unemployment problems are Africa American and only a small percentage of them...people bend over backward to do things for beautiful attractive Caucasian People.....be it offering of JOBS or Rubber Stamping Theirs Application for disability....

I do, but they strip ("dance") and hook ("escort") to make up for the money while they try to find a real job.

Yes. Me.

I have gone on many interviews, but always get interviewed by females. I think the combination of smarts, looks sand my résumé has worked against me. Like it or not, the fact is that at least in business many (not all) women are threatened by woman who are as smart as they are, but are slender and pretty.

BTW: I am a Caucasian.
