Hey,
The majority of the jobs I've held were in industries that operated 24/7/365 for the most part. I've had to work my fair-share of holidays. Everytime I work a holiday, a coworker or friend will say "if it makes you feel any better, I had to work xx holiday". Honestly, it doesn't. Most holidays are slow, and I don't feel that we need to be open (especially the job I am at now). Does anyone else feel just kinda "meh" when someone says that, vs "ohhhh you worked Thanksgiving? OK! I feel so much better now, thanks!!"

Reason: spelling
I used to volunteer to work holidays because it was easy money -- getting paid while goofing off since there's hardly any work. When someone expressed sympathy I simply sigh and pretend it was such a hardship.

I have worked some holidays over the past few years as i am in a 24/7/365 business. It just comes with the territory and if i can take off and switch with someone. If not i get the following holiday off usually. Just the way it goes I work hard and do what I can.
i don't mind working holidays at all, where i work we get overtime AND we still get the PTO time put into our bank for the holiday, so it's kind of like double time and a half. and my bosses aren't usually there, and people don't expect me to be there so i can get a lot of work done without being interrupted. i only have to come in on holidays if they fall on a payroll day though, and that's not that common.
and yeah, the "don't feel bad, i had x bad thing happen to me" approach doesn't ever make anyone feel better, i don't think. it's just a backhanded way of griping but it's pretty harmless.
I had to work holidays when I had a part-time job while in college. I did not mind working holidays, as I spent time with my family and loved ones after getting off work. I also received holiday bonus pay while working!
I live in Florida and work at a 24 hour drug store. I love when customers tell me how beautiful the weather is outside and that it's too bad I am working on a Saturday. Christmas Day is our busiest day of the year. I hate working nights/holidays/weekends. My next job will be a 9-5er there is no amount of empathy from anyone that will make me change my mind or feel better about crappy hours..lol

Time and a half or double time and a half or whatever, always takes the sting out of working holidays. That being said, I enjoy not having to work holidays now. Not being in security is awesome.
