I would suggest finding something near and that would offer enough to get by. Some of these "real" jobs may not be near the OP. I do not know where the OP lives but not every where has the same opportunities. If retail and fast food are the best bets, go for it.

NYC has many different businesses, other than retail. By eliminating all other businesses from consideration, he makes it nearly impossible to find work. If the retail sector has been a total failure, then he needs to look at other areas.
