How do you do a walk in to a mom & pop Retail Store?

Mom and pop meaning not a large chain store, a small private business like a store of one or only a few stores

which is best

a) ask any employee are you hiring, then they direct you maybe to whoever has a job application, you fill it out and hand it in

b) you ask for the manager, then ask are you hiring

c) you ask to speak to the owner, then ask are your hiring

d) you don't walk in, instead in the same amount of time you are able to stay at home and call several businesses, you ask to speak to the manager

e) same as d) but ask to speak to the owner

I would at least ask for the manager but I would probably say "Is the manager or owner here? I'd like to find out if they are hiring."

Dude, there is no right way to do this. This is perhaps the least thing you should be thinking about. Just go in and ask for an application regardless of if they are hiring or not. Fill it out and turn it in to a manager. Don't worry about insignificant details like the question in the OP.

Prepare a résumé and cover letter. Walk in at a slow time, such as a Tuesday afternoon. Ask to speak to the owner or manager if they are available. Have a very brief speech of 10-20 seconds prepared, telling them why you would be a good worker for their business. Give them your résumé, tell them that you would like to fill out an application if they have one available. Thank them for their time.

I'd walk in an ask to speak to the owner.
My daughter got hired immediately ( starting right then and there) one time ,doing just that
It won't hurt to have a resume either..maybe a couple of good references if possible.
good luck.

I agree with this. I feel like most small business owners want to be talked to directly unless they get people coming in constantly.

I filled out an application, called a few days later and got a furious manager who told me he wasn't hiring at all.
