They might see it as "well you've stayed later these times before, why can't you stay late now and why is it a problem"? You don't waste your energy staying late with no clear purpose.. I'm not against staying late if it's needed to finish something critical.. in fact, if you don't do this on a regular basis (but are prepared just in case), it won't be a huge drain when it becomes necessary.
