If so, how did you cope with having a job that made you feel like you were unwanted and didn't belong, and made you feel like everyone secretly hated you? At my current retail job, I feel very underappreciated. I work hard, and I always make sure to arrive on time to work, I never question any orders that my boss gives me, I always try my best to listen, but when I make occasional mistakes, I get threatened to get fired over it. It makes me feel like a lesser human being because the efforts that I've made at my job are rarely acknowledged. I really feel depressed knowing how replaceable I am. It's the sad reality of it. I wish I could get some slack. I'm new, and I'm expected to make mistakes, of course they aren't intentional mistakes, but they will happen. When I do make mistakes, I learn how to avoid them in the future which is important. But I just wish my boss was able to see it the way I did. I've only been at my new job for a few weeks but already I feel unwelcome and feel like a burden.

Work is work. It's how you make money. Nothing more. Concerns about being unwanted or that people hate you all amount to wasted emotional/mental energy. Do you "want" your co-workers? Do you hate any of them? It goes both ways and ultimately doesn't matter as long as your paychecks still come on time.

Yes, I've had a job I've hated. I've always stayed as long as I needed to stay. Sometimes that was years.

Even college grads working "real" jobs are as easily replaced nowadays like minimum wage retail workers.

And yeah, I have been in retail nearly 20 years and it can be very miserable for some. The non livable wages, the incompetent managers trying to screw with your paychecks/hours, and the constant standing/lifting/bending does not help. It's still not a bad job for someone with no other prospects who can tolerate it.

I think anyone that has been in the workforce for any length of time has probably had a job that they hated. I've had a couple, and my way of dealing with them was simple: Clock in, do my job, clock out, go home. In my free time I started networking with other companies and I moved on once I found something that seemed to fit my criteria better. Eventually that led to running my own business, but quite frankly if you are as concerned about people liking you as your post leads me to believe that may not be a good option for you.

On the other hand, you've only been there a few weeks. That isn't really enough time to figure out whether you like the job unless the situation is extreme. You might want to just hang out and do your job the best you can for a while. After a few months, reevaluate and see if you still feel the same way.

Every working day of my life. Hoping to find a job specialising in my degree but so far, been a cleaner, pizza delivery driver, pot washer, done some administration work though at least. But all boring horrible jobs.

It's rare for someone to go through life without having at least one job that is just like yours. Sometimes you like the job, but not the boss, or not the co-workers. It's especially hard to drag yourself out of bed when you can't stand any of those 3. It's just a part of life, and hopefully a short part. Things do seem to be getting better lately, at least around the Seattle area and even farther out.

I haven't seen so many "Help Wanted" signs since before the start of the recession in 2008. Naturally these are not $100,000 tech jobs but in the last 5-6 years posting signs was rare because employers were getting a lot of applicants from their websites or even without any openings. Today, for example, in the small town of Sequim WA I saw signs at a hotel, a garden store, and 3 different restaurants (1 fast food).

yeah i've had worst situations. To be brief, my first ever job i felt unwanted and found out that everyone was talking about me behind my back lol. but then i realized i'm here for 6mo experience, and these people have been here for years lmao. also my second job that was retail was similar to yours, i just got a little over a years experience, thankfully got promoted and got that on my resume, and bounced.

you need to look at your situation from a 3rd persons point of view. what are your goals for your job now?
do you want to work here? move up in the company?
are you just hear to get work experience? (like i was)
is it only the money that is keeping you there?

in the end, this isn't the only job in the universe, in your free time, perhaps job hunt for another place to work.

however, every job situation is going to have its drama wherever you go, just some more and less
so dont make your decisions primarily on how you think people feel about you

I know EXACTLY how you feel.

My last job was like that. I was a supervisor and was immediately thanked by my Manager for taking work off her plate. Then for health reasons I had to go to p/t, I gave up my supervisory position since it was a full time one, but did the same work. I think she was angry at me, because that's when things changed. She was always calling me in for meetings with and without my new supervisor, but I was never written up and HR was never involved, which is the process in the company when looking to fire someone.

I figured it was personal, I prayed every day to be fired.

My manager went on maternity leave and the new manager was somewhat better.

After a year another position at another location opened up, I applied and was promoted back into management.

I never take what I have for granted and thank god every day for what I have now.

How I got through it was literally counting the hours, I am not that kind of a clock watcher, but it helped. I also made sure I had one good thing at the end of the work day to look forward to.

One good thing about that kind of a job is that you appreciate the good ones that much better.

If things are that bad, you probably can't move in the company yet since you haven't been there long enough, either give it some more time to work itself out, try to emulate someone that management seems to like.

Good Luck.

I think it's normal to feel that way. You will make mistakes but you will eventually learn. It will get better once newer employees get hired. They will be glad you are around to help those newbies.

Some people, well a lot of people don't have much patience with new employees. I knew an idiot who had to be retrained because he was dumb as a rock and once he got promoted to management, he had no patience with new subordinates. I felt like reminding him that he had to go through training twice. At least his employees had passed training the first time around.
