So what do you tell people like my sister's ex coworker who makes $50k, got kicked out of her apartment in Oakland (she wasn't on the lease) and is now finding she is priced out of the market on legit rentals. She has a small requirements list (being close to transit as she doesn't drive) and can't find anything under $1200. She has pricy loans to pay and other expenses. She can only find precarious sublets where she is not in the lease and could be kicked out again. Unreasonable expectations?
Yes! $50k is plenty for a single.
So what.
It's the same around here. That doesn't mean you're poor. She can share an apartment or get a basement studio.
Anyway, $1200 should also be doable on 50K especially if you don't have a car.
You can work in engineering at a city job...those are pretty stable...OR anything else that is government (federal, state, whatever) and not a temp job....other good sectors are renewable energy, electric, power....etc. medical!??
No. I am implying that if you are a minority (which I am) you might have more perspective of how most people who are not wealthy live and what most people make.
WOW!....so now you're being racist by implying that "white" people don't have a clue what's it's like not to be wealthy as do all minorities.
Here's a clue:Most white people know very well what it's like to be poor...

Fine by me.
And if you understood what poverty is, then you would understand that 60K all things considered is a decent salary no matter where you are.
