I'm a black guy as well, and I have to agree with the general consensus in this thread.
If you don't know the context behind this individual making the statement "I'm a racist" and they allege it wasn't directed towards you, then don't blow it out of proportion and risk losing your job.
But even so, I'd likely give that person (who was talking about being called a racist) a huge side-eye from then forward.
If he was telling a story and said the word racist I do not think that means anything and frankly is none of my business. If he was walking around saying racial slurs that is one thing. If you feel like you need to go to HR then do so, I wouldn't.
I was sitting in the remote docking station using my laptop at work and 2 white guys walk through( both are nurses here at the hospital) and one says: "I'm a racist". He didn't realize I was sitting there(I'm black). Once he looked at me, he kind of casualy luaghed it off, like it was no big deal.
I'm not upset but I don't think that has a place at work, especially a healthcare facility. When it comes come minority groups there are major heathcare disparities. The last thing I want to hear come out of a white or black persons mouth is: "I'm a racist". Even if they are joking.
^No..what's sad is people's lack of comprehension skills. I clearly said I understood what the guy meant....
Well, you didn't say that in your first post, and a lot of people never read any further than that.
