Dont these HIM employers prefer people who have medical backgrounds, such as nurses? I have a RN -ADN degree and having have worked in facilities that use paper charting, i really see the need for good EMR systems that are "staff friendly." Are there online training programs?

Employers prefer those who are best suited for the job. If that means a clinical background then that's what the qualifications will require, if it means more or a technical or analytical background, then that's what the qualifications will require, and so on. There is room for both. An RN or MD or other clinicians won't have nearly as much experience, knowledge, or aptitude for many things that people with a CS or business or other background will.

Yes, there are plenty of on line training programs and different levels of certifications and trainings (report writing, superuser, end user, developer, etc.). Both proprietary and publicly available. But an EMR isn't one worldwide application. There are many different ones so nobody can point you to a training site that teaches you how to use an EMR. You have to specify which one.

Edit: And HIM is only loosely related to EMR's.
