I got a call after applying for best buy today and we had an interview setup and at the end of the phone call I asked if it was okay if I was 16 and they said no you need to be 18. I asked because this happened to me before at staples. Even when I applied online It asked if I was 18 and if I was atleast 16 and I checked the appropriate boxes. I'm not sure why I have to be 18.

Did you think to ask them? There may be a perfectly simple reason. Ask.

Depending on the state, there is a compulsory school attendance age. In most states it's 17 or 18. For the employer the additional paperwork and permits required to hire someone under that age just make it more difficult and time-consuming so they don't want to bother with it. Since they are getting plenty of applicants over that age there is no motivation to do all that extra work. It's probably not company policy, just the preference of that particular store.

Because if you are 16 you are restricted to the amount of hours you can work, as well as how late at night you can work. Some companies don't want to deal with the hassle of hiring workers who are less than 18 years old because they don't want to deal with scheduling issues.

It varies from state to state, but a law that I'm familiar with in states that can hire 16 year olds is that for many of the jobs, you have to be 18 if you're going to be handling money.

As mentioned, there are also often restrictions on number of hours worked and how late you're allowed to work.

Yup. It's not worth their trouble trying deal with the scheduling restrictions that come with your age.

If you're 16 and in school, there are laws in some states (might even be federal) that restrict when you can work and for how long each day. Some stores need people with very flexible schedules so it may be that Best Buy put a policy in place to hire people out of high school that can work more than someone with those restrictions.

Edit: Well, just realized that a bunch of other people answered before I did.
