Seems to me, when employers really want to get rid of someone, the lying on the application card is often played if they have a weak excuse to get rid of you. Has anyone seen this?
Of course I could see things like a criminal history that was not discovered or disclosed, but say, because you did not include this job that you worked at or this job that you were fired from is very petty, again, after you are hired and have been there at least 1 month.
I haven't seen that exactly. There was a team lead at my old job that, when he first applied, said he was a high school graduate. The company didn't verify it or whatever. Later on, he became a team lead and there was still no big deal. It was just assumed that he'd graduated high school since he said he did. He eventually put in for a supervisor position and during that interview, he let it slip that he didn't graduate high school and hadn't even gotten his GED. He got turned down for that job, but didn't get in trouble. The company even started a GED program because of this team lead. They basically told him that if he went through the GED program successfully, he would be eligible to be a supervisor later on if he still wanted to be one. This idiot refused to do the program so they fired him.
I call him an idiot because the company went out of their way to allow him to keep the job he had and gave him a way to correct what he'd put on his application years before, but also to move up further in the company and he said no. He would have even been paid for his time in the program.
On a side note, several other employees did take advantage of the program and completed it successfully.

Yes, I have seen this. One of the company rules is that anything false on an application is grounds for not hiring, and if discovered later, for immediate dismissal. As a manager, I could be disciplined/fired for not taking that action if I discovered it.
This only means that you've made enemies. Somebody doesn't like you and digged up your dirt. Nobody has the time to scour though someone's background unless they have something to gain from it.
After 9/11 we were required to go through (Federal) background checks in order to get security clearance to work at the airport. People who were less than honest on their original application... were let go. Some of them had years of service with stellar work histories.
At the time ... There was a huge witch hunt going on to root out terrorists or potential trouble.
yes; if they have good reason to believe you lied.
