If I did not know the difference between "quit" and "quitted", I'd never leave any job.

If I went to work for a company/in a job that is open 365 days a years and has substantial activity after 5PM I'd expect to do my fair share of weekends, holidays and night hours.

Thought about it...

I'm 24/7 on call unless I am physically too far away on vacation with a replacement in place.

Closest I have come is when I was sailing in the SF Bay on a Sunday and there was a problem at the Hospital with the Steam Boilers... told the Boss it would take me two hours before I could be there... she didn't take that well... told her it was the nature of sailing.

I was told that if I'm not available they would have to find someone else for the job... I told her I understood and went back and started boxing up my office and left.

About 10 the next morning I received a call asking if I was sick... I said no... just working around the house... then I was asked why I wasn't at work and I said you made it clear if I couldn't be available 24/7 you would find someone who would.

She said it was just panic and that my job was mine as long as I wanted...

I did decide not to take a job when they said i would be on call on my days off. I asked them about what if i'm at the lake? They had a two hour to report in thing. NUTS!

I haven't quit a job yet because of the hours but I did try to leave my current job over a year ago when they went to the 12 hour shifts. I actually got hired for another 3pm to 1130pm job but was called back to my current job to work 3pm to 1130pm. That turned into working double shifts from 3pm to 730am. I've been doing that for over a year now and it's taking it's toll. I was on day shift for two weeks teaching and it totally messed me up physically. My body doesn't know when to sleep anymore. I was up until 3am washing floors and I have to leave for work soon. I've been working a lot of 4 hour shifts which is nice until you get the pay check. I'm leaning towards early retirement and a lot depends on our new manager. Working 12 hour shifts on either nights or days will be torture for me and the 3pm to 1130pm shift is what I've done for over 25 years. It's where I feel best physically.

So in reality... what you're saying is that you want money, but you don't want to work for it? Explains a lot.

Every job, no matter what it is, will have downsides. Whether it is hours, salary, conditions, location or people... There will be something that isn't always pleasant. Learn to deal with it. 60k a year? Fine, better be willing to work nights and weekends.

Not always some public sector guys here make that amount with no weekends or nights required

I'm sorry but 40-60k is going to require working more hours than it sounds like you're willing to put in.

Sure... it sounds like a 9-5 job might be normal hours until you factor in having to come in on your off days once in a while to take care of an emergency, or stay late a few months at a time to get a project on its feet.
