Bosses prefer early birds?

I don't care, really. I work in technology. At one time my best employee was a guy I never saw because he didn't wake up until late afternoon when I was already gone. He never failed to get the job done, although getting him at a staff meeting was impossible. You have to pick your battles. I'm sure some of it depends on the job and the function too. Many circumstances are different.
