Microwave should be in the break room, not just for the smell but for safety. I worked in a place where there was a microwave in a room full of servers and electronic equipment. Someone managed to microwave something which burst into flames and ended up doing thousands of dollars worth of damage.
with such tight quarters, maybe the office can come up with a banned list, like no popcorn in the microwave, no fish, etc
be careful though, and make it general items. when you start getting into spices there is a possibility of "bla bla bla you are discriminating against [fill in the blank]"
good luck OP it must suck to have to sit in the midst of the funk all day
This is really an inadequacy of the office and so the fault, if there is fault, rests squarely with management, not those making use of what management offers for the purpose management has offered it.
If there's no break room there should be no microwave. Unfortunately you already have a microwave and local stinkies. There's not much you can do to put the genie back in that bottle.
You are lucky it was only a sub. When our workplace was taken over by H1B visa workers we learned all about stinky food. Every breakroom in the place smelled like dead fish. But I bet they probably though our food was stinky too!
