Just curious I mean I been doing this for quite a while now. But how will it affect my career in the long run if I stay comfy like this for quite some time now? Been at the same company for 8 years now.
Like I always wonder what happens if I ever get laid off ( not likely) but still possible.
Or if I will ever get paid the same somewhere else or even get another IT job?
My skills are just very basic and stagnant and I get along very well with my co workers and bosses.
Like how bad would it be if I was in the same/job company (government) for 10- 20 more years?
If you're ok with it, then it's ok. I would suggest try to learn more things though, either take on more tasks or just go take a class here and there to keep you somewhat up to date.
I don't see any reason to quit if you enjoy your job, but it sounds like you need to discuss professional development opportunities with you boss. As you have correctly assumed, if you don't develop new skills it will be harder for you to find another job should you need to at some point.
Is there something else you would like to do? If not, what is wrong with enjoying the position you have? Are there more responsibilities in your present position or something new you could learn about it? Perhaps, that would impress your managers and give you a chance to increase your salary.
If you are happy then its great. If you want more of a challenge maybe you could try to be a help desk lead. For the 2 IT Help desk jobs I've had there has always been a lead. I'm sure with your exp you could possibly get the title and retain your position on the desk.
Well if you're gonna stagnate, its best to do it in the public sector. In the private sector if you stagnate too long chances are you'll be let go eventually.
Companies have an "up or out" mentality today. There is an indirect (Or direct) pressure now to switch jobs every 2 years or so now even if there are no jobs to move up to
