Just curious has anyone ever been late to work due to traffic reasons? is it a good excuse?
What if an accident happens on the road, you forgot something at home, or maybe you need to go to the DMV real quick?

You should leave yourself some cushion to deal with minor delays. There is not much you can do if you are stuck behind an overturned semi, in which case you need to call your boss and let them know what is going on. Forgetting something at home and running personal errands are not acceptable reasons to be late for work.

I'm curious as to why the OP thinks traffic issues are not a valid reason for being late to work. I say that because why else ask this question.

I have seen plenty of people get held up by traffic or accidents and it's never been an issue for being late to work, as long as you let someone know about the holdup.

If your place of business has an attendance policy I'm guessing it has a line in there about how the purpose of giving employees X times late or tardy is precisely in order to account for personal emergencies, inclement weather, traffic jams, etc.

You have to look at it like this: There is always an excuse (reason) for being late. Something happened to make you late, every time.

Ultimately it's just easiest to have a consistent policy and not ask why someone is late, but just treat a late as a late and an absence as an absence. That is much less stressful for everyone, especially the management, who otherwise would have to listen to a song-and-dance for just about every tardy/absence trying to get it excused. (And yes I know some businesses choose to operate that way, but it would drive me crazy. Better to have an objective policy.)

No excuse is valid over and over. Occasionally being latebbecause of extreme traffic can be unavoidable in some parts of the country. I usually have a 25 minute commute but occasionally it takes me over 90 minutes. I am not leaving myself 65 minutes of cushion every day, though I do on days with an 8am meeting.

It depends on how often you use this excuse. Once a year or so it is a valid excuse. More often than that it is not.

Forgetting something at home is not a valid excuse.

Needing to go to the DMV is absolutely not a valid excuse.

I am late 1-2 times a year. That is about the maximum acceptable frequency.

If you have an hourly start, then I'd limit that to a very infrequent excuse. If you are a salaried employee without a fixed start time, then it doesn't matter (IMO).

But what if you have a traffic ticket or your licensed is about to expired?
