See no problem with it, if people can't compete against someone in their own language and country, then they should work on their own skills before blaming someone else. Even without h1b, they would still be outcompeted by technology and neighbors and be jobless
People here in the US are indeed able to compete against others of their own skills and language. What they're unable to compete against are lowball wages for those who eventually amount to nothing more than indentured servants. It has nothing to do with job skills or job fit or any other HR mumbo jumbo we're being told.
It is about InfoSys and a few Indian body shops scamming the system.
Facebook pays H1-B 140K. other employers pays on average 126K. Tech companies all pay above market rates for H1B after they drain the STEM majors from the top colleges. If companies can't get the talent they need, guess what.....they will open more facilities overseas and that hurts the US more
As authors stated - There is no shortage of workers in any capacity in America.
What Facebook, Google and other tech companies are doing is 100% Un-american.
There are more than enough decent engineers and computer scientists in the US that are unemployed today. They might need some training at most, which these tech companies could easily afford to provide.
Instead Facebook, Google, Microsoft and others give these potential American workers the middle finger!
For the highly qualified foreigner that we really need, H1b is ok.
For firing Americans to abuse this H1b system just for cheap labor, we definitely must eliminate this plus the UNPATRIOTIC BOSSES, MANAGERS, AND CEO's who let this happen.

This is the absolute truth.
It's a convenient lie for employers to claim they can't find American workers with Technical skills. American colleges graduate hundreds of thousands of American students every year with all kinds of technical degrees (engineering, science, math, etc). But all those jobs go to H1-B visas.
The h1b program is not bringing in highly qualified it is bringing in cheap and desperate to displace US workers in direct violation of the rules and purpose of the program and nothing is being done about it. Disney and Southern Ca Edison should have had all access to the program revoked and their executives arrested for fraud.
Who created those jobs the H-1B are replacing? American companies, built by American workers, staffed by American workers! WE created these jobs, now suddenly we aren't capable of handling them But we can train our replacements, especially if one works for IBM, Disney, TRU, etc. Of course! Some guy who barely speaks English and isn't even familiar with the basics of the job is imminently more qualified than someone born, raised, educated here in the USA, and has been doing the job for 20+ years Out with the old and in with the new To He!! with those worthless Americans

Partially, yes.

Facebook does pay about $140k, but the average for H-1B's is around $79k

$79k for a developer is below-market, not above-market.
Ultimately this has to be looked at by region, since H-1B filings are not spread evenly across the United States. The average H-1B filing for New York is $94k, San Francisco $102k.
In Charlotte it is $77k, Atlanta is $76k, Phoenix is $75k, Tampa is $74k, in Dallas it is $72k.
These are not the salaries of "elite" talent. These are right around entry-level developer salaries for these given regions.

They can get the talent they need in America. They just don't want to pay American-level wages and salaries. They'd prefer to import people who are willing to work for cheaper than Americans.
