This is basically ubiquitous at my job. Anyone who leaves, as long as they are not leaving in disgrace, will send out a goodbye email on their last day. That's just how it's done. It's a small enough organization that we pretty much all know each other, at least by name/face if not a more personal connection.

I hate company wide email blasts. Too many people think what they have to say is important to everyone else.

Unless you are the CEO or something, its annoying as hell.

About 10 years ago a coworker quit the company I worked for (about 150 people) and sent a company wide email about 3 pages long blasting his bosses and the owner of the company, including his departments profits and losses and some highlights from his performance review.

Funniest thing I have ever seen.

They escorted him off the property and deleted the email off the servers, I knew that was coming and made a PDF I still have.

Looked him up the other day looks like he went thru a job every 6-7 months after that until he started his own IT company 5 years ago.

I've never seen anyone send an email quite like that, but I HAVE seen someone send a nasty email when they quit to the entire company. It was long and had all of this person's gripes and complaints about management, etc. The email itself was amusing, but even more amusing was the idiots who still worked there replying to all with their own opinions (mostly complaints) and then the OTHER idiots replying to all griping about everyone replying to all.

I can't figure out whether it's considered courteous or slightly condescending.
Everybody does that at my facility. We are around 100 people. They usually leave a personal email address also for the one's who want to stay in contact.

If somebody wouldn't do it, they would say he is rude.

Maybe they are insecure and want people to know they didn't get fired.

Either way, who cares? If you weren't friends with them, just delete it.

Don't feel pressured into composing a courteous, well-written good-bye message of your own when you leave, if that's what you're thinking.

We had a Doctor the was moving to Alaska... his specialty was Anesthesia...

Just before he walked out the door he made an overhead announcement to the entire Hospital... singing I did it My Way and closed with Elvis has left the building... his first name is Elvis.

Admin was most unhappy... but if you knew his personality it fits.

I think that there's no reason to throw in the face of the current workers that this job ISNT the 'opportunity of a lifetime' sort of like saying 'i got something better than what you all face on a daily basis so adios muchachos'

Would have been better just saying ive had great memories and sad to leave and leave out the 2nd sentence, no need to add that in there.

At my last job, over a 5 year period, everyone I was aware of who left the company sent out such an email (many of whom were not millennials, btw). Also, when I gave my own notice to leave, my boss strongly encouraged me to send out such an email. The emails did not go out to the entire company however. People usually just send them to their own department along with other specific people they worked with over the years.

When people work together, it's helpful to know who's there and who's not so you can plan your projects accordingly. I'm not sure what the big deal is...
