I have seem to notice that many people generally work long hours in the private sector.
However not counting government jobs or non profits.
Is it possible to have a great work life balance in private sector?
You know not work more than 40 hours a week generally.
Weekends/holidays off.
Not be on call or have any off hour duty?
When you are done YOU ARE DONE?

Is this possible in Private Sector?

I work at a large corporation. I rarely ever work more than 40 hours a week. I'm theoretically on call all the time but so far I've only been called a couple times a year. My management is also very accommodating with flexible schedules as long as the work gets done.

There are plenty of jobs out there with a reasonable balance. They may not always be the most exciting or highest paying, but you just need to look around.

Sure, you balance your life around your work

Or accept a job that is 9-5

I had best work/life balance when working hourly. Few places I have worked would want to pay out overtime. For them its cheaper just to keep salaried-exempt staff "overtime".

Of course I won't make as much money as my salaried bosses. But it's nice being able to go home on time and leaving the mess there.

It really just depends on the company. I've been a part of both corporations and startups that were insane intensity and unreasonable with work demands, and corporations and startups who were VERY good about working no more than 40 hours and having lots of flex time to balance life.

The key in today's world is not the job we do, but the company we work at. A normally bad job in a very good company will make many people very happy.

Work Life Balance is a stupid concept. You should love your job so it does not feel like work.

I had a miserable 35 hour a week job. Sucked my soul, I switched to a 55 hour a week job that was heaven. And I would hang out with bosses and co-workers even after work.

Folks assume long hours are bad. Wrong, only hours in a bad company.

Ideal yes, but not realistic for many people. Finding a job you love is a luxury few people will find, and many will pursue it for years without finding it. Count your blessings!

Actually I left if for my dream 40 hour a week job. Been here 10 years.

What I look for in a job. My own office with a window with a view, my own staff, my own cost center, report direct to C-level or a board. Freedom to set up and run my dept and do hiring and firing decisions. A T&E budget to allow staff to go to lunch, dinners, training's. Ability to work from home for kids things and events. At least a months vacation. I like LTI and bonus. Also interesting meaningful work, good benefits and lots of free snacks at work. Also I good title and opportunities to present to board and interactions external auditors and regulators. Finally, family friendly company.

I have staff with me for as long as a decade. I tell them the truth. When work at the number one company in the world and have the best boss in the world there is no place to go but down in their career.

"work/life" balance means different things to different people. As an example - what you described above isn't work/life balance as it denotes that I have a ridged schedule. I have no problems peppering my "work" throughout my day as long as I can set my own schedule. Again - that's just me - it may not work for others.

So to answer the question - yes, you can have great work life balance in the private sector if your definition matches that of how an organization operates. You and I can be working at the same company doing almost the same job, and you may think there is zero work/life balance while I may find it to be the perfect balance.
