I have got a job offer and my new employer (say employer ABC) is asking me to submit for background check. I cannot delay submission for background check. However I am expecting another better job offer (from say XYZ) within next 2-3 weeks. I am thinking the moment I get this new offer from XYZ I will resign from ABC. It is also possible that if I get new XYZ offer earlier , my ABC background check might still be in progress. In that case I might not even report to ABC office and decline the offer immediately after background check.
I cannot delay this background check. I don't know how ABC will react. Will it be ok? XYZ offer would be much much better and a good for my career. I cannot reject ABC now as I haven't got a confirmation from XYZ.
You're trying to count your chickens before they hatch and rarely do those number match up. What you're expecting and what's reality, also rarely match up. Did XYZ confirm to you in writing that they are going to make an offer? Or is that what you heard in the interview?
I know how ABC with react, they'll be pissed. Here they are wasting time and money to get you on board and you want to quit before you even attend orientation. Can you do it? Sure, people do it all the time, but just know that you will forever be considered 'ineligible for rehire' with ABC until the end of time.
Basically - can you change your mind about accepting an offer for a job? Yes. It happens all the time.
And you can do it at any time, no need to even wait for the background check to finish. Since that really doesn't help anybody. But you certainly should stay the course until you have a viable offer from XYZ.
As Kim mentioned though - you will likely have burned that bridge. How much of that plays into your decision is ... well, your decision.
Why not just go through the background check for ABC, pass that, and then ask to delay your start date another week or two? Better to delay your start date than a background check.
The background check could take 1-3 weeks. Do the check and, as mentioned above, tell them you need to give your current employer two weeks notice.
