It sounds as if you may be more withdrawn and non-communicative than most people. If this is a problem that follows you from place to place, the reality is that it will be easier for you to change a bit rather than expect everybody else to do so.
A small amount of social grace goes a long way. Saying hello in the morning, asking politely about how the weekend went, and generally not being the weird reclipusive guy may fix your problems at work. While I understand your desire to be completely focused on your task and exclude the rest of the world unless they have a legitimate question, most human beings are not built that way.
Say hello to people, pretend you care, and mirror your screen. I bet life at work gets better.
Hostile work environment has a specific definition, and is not generally applied to somebody who doesn't like their coworkers action. It is used to describe a pattern of harassment based on discrimination against a protected class.
True but it sounds like a lot of hostility here, not that it is a discriminatory workplace.
I am not justifying the bullying but ... don't you type? Move the mouse? do you have the laptop on your LAP or how come you look like your eyes are closed?
Half of my coworkers have laptops and earplugs but no one looks like they sleep.
I type at times but not constant. I move the trackpad but don't use the mouse. Its really just bullying and I'm a target. Others do the same thing (only use their laptops, wear headphones and have similar postures) and no one says anything. I'm thankful for all the response because I now feel more armed to respond in the future.
I think we all have someone like the OP in our offices. It's easy to see how he could improve his situation without having to run to HR.
