What works in the US doesn't work in Europe - here if you dare mix work with personal life by getting too friendly with colleagues, the information you confide in them comes back to bite you. I have a "friend" at work that every time I text something to her, she would snitch to our team lead lol. Of course I no longer text her or contact her in any way

Well, since you are talking about different things, then it's kind of irrelevant. And no, it's not corporate prison to be expected to participate in work related activities during regular business hours. It's called work. Sometimes it's sitting at my desk, sometimes it's attending meetings.
Co-workers getting together after work is a completely optional social activity, and no one calls it team building in that case.
