"Festivus" is a good compromise. I know a family who actually gives each other "December presents" and nobody ever complains when they get one. Italian food is good for December present giving night. Lasagna is probably my favorite.
It seems unfair that work environments abide by certain boundaries, while not respecting other boundaries or even mocking them. If you understand why racial or sexual jokes at the workplace is inappropriate (instead of simply fearing the consequences), why is it a problem to understand why religious celebration at the workplace makes someone of another religion uncomfortable? In any other context beside religion, this behavior from at the workplace wouldn't be tolerated, or even attempted by the co-workers. Funny world we live in.
The people who whine the loudest about this phony "war on christmas" do it for political purposes. Most of them couldn't care less about having true religious faith to live their life by. They are militantly right wing. I really don't think Jesus would tell them to horde guns and wave a flag around that represents slavery if he suddenly showed up.
