if there was a federal law that capped businesses from paying employers, what would that be ?

something like the opposite of what minimum-wage is.

It will never happen, the state governments can't even cap the salaries of state workers with sports coaches and athletic directors making ridiculous paychecks, averaging 1.6 million, and as much as 7 million (Nick Saban at Alabama).

Still, if it did somehow become law, they would probably place it at or near the current average CEO pay, which is $13.8 million.

I think salary capping is a red herring. If the salary floor was high enough and the government fulfilled its responsibility to ensure that there were sufficient jobs of that sort for all who need them, then that would be sufficient. No one would care how much some CEO is making if there weren't people working for the CEO's company who couldn't afford to pay their own way and secure their own future.

points, i remember this made headlines because during the last recession the governor of connecticut asked state employees (including professors at uconn) to take a pay cut except jim calhoun refused:
Connecticut Huskies coach Jim Calhoun gets into heated exchange over salary

his rationalization was that the mens basketball team brought in $8 million in revenue to the general fund for the school from tv, ticket sales and merchandise so his $5 million contract was worth it.

The players might have a salary cap but the owners (and probably coaches) don't.

Probably 500K a year.

Nobody needs to make more than 500K a year. That is a ridiculous sum of money for one person to make as is.

I actually have thought about your idea and it would theoretically solve some problems.

But companies would just find ways, legal and illegal, to pay people who were worth more than that.

Just like the NFL...

Just like no one needs a Ferrari, or a Lamborghini, etc. But guess what, lots of blue color workers make fantastic salaries building those toys for the rich and famous. The second you get rid of the rich, you get rid of those jobs. No one needs to make more that 500k a year, but the pursuit of those riches is what drives innovation. You think that all of the fashion designers people wear, would have pursued that career if they knew that no matter what, they were making 500k. What about medical innovation. History has proven that humans forced to live in an oppressive environment struggle, they loose motivation, innovation, and society suffers.

We love sports because of the larger than life celebrities it creates, kids dream of making it. Take away the making it part, and what do you have? What happens to Hollywood when all of the money is gone?

I have a family member that is a carpenter. On average, he earns 50k to 70k a year. Except for one year, where he got a job redoing an old floor, staircase, and balcony railings on a mansion. That year, he earned over 150k. Why, the rich person who owned the home didn't care what they paid, as long as the finished product meet their standards.

People forget about all of the blue collar jobs that are created to build that yacht, that private jet, that supercar, that mansion on the hill.

The super high earners make most of their $ not through a salary but through dividends.

That said, cap it at 2mil/yr.
