I’ve been in my position 3 years and have always received great reviews and told I’m a top employee. I’m ready to move on to a different position that opened up within the same dept. I applied and the manager scheduled an interview with him and the supervisor last week and then the next day when I came in he rescheduled it for a week later. In the meantime there are many young people from outside the company interviewing. If they were really interested in me wouldn’t I have already had my interview? I’m 43 but most people in this company are under 35 and nobody has ever been hired in the position I am going for that is over 30.

Date of the interview most often has little to nothing to do with hiring preference. Maybe they just want to do all the outside interviews first? Go for it.

Any real job search includes both internal and external opportunities.

I understand but they have done a reorganization and me moving up to this next roll would be something I know I can excel at but if they higher someone outside instead of me it’s will be very disheartening.

If it's a good company they will hire the best candidate not just the person who is internal. I realize it may not seem fair if someone outside gets hired but they may just be a better candidate. Being inside helps but it isn't a free ride to promotion city.

If you don't try simply because it would be disheartening if you fail, you'll never try for anything beyond what you have. Worst case, you don't get the job. No big deal. Failure is very motivating. Print out the rejection if you don't get it, hang it on your wall as a reminder to work harder for the next time you go after a new job.

If you are an internal candidate, we are going to interview you when we believe it causes the least disruption to internal operations. Your place in the interview line has nothing to do with your suitability as a candidate.

When you apply for a role but they hire someone from outside?

Applied for a job and it was given to my coworker

You can ask variations of the same questions on this forum (technically against terms of service), but your energy would be better spent looking elsewhere outside the company. If they wanted to hire you internally they would have done so already.

They're interviewing externals before you? Your goose is cooked. If you were an attractive prospect, they'd have approached you anyway. If you're ready to move on, find another opportunity.

I feel like it never hurts to interview. Worst that happens... you don't get the job. Consider it practice @ interviewing.
