I have a job in a small business and to get customers, they charge prices (for my labor) that are 30 yrs out of date and so are our wages. A lot of young people come and go and it's because instead of hiring a few skilled adults and paying them a living wage, they hire half a dozen idiots and keep the ones that kiss their butts. I should check out Chick-Fil-A; there are a lot around here and $11 an hour is more than I get.
There is always a job opening for a person who happens to have just the right experience for the job that's open.
As a hiring manager, beyond basic qualifications, I've always focused most on smarts, attitude, and ability to learn. If someone is smart & has a positive attitude and the ability to learn, that is about 3/4 of the battle.
I wouldn't be having such a difficult time trying to find a new job then with a college education, veteran status, 10 years work experience. Or even getting an INTERVIEW. . Maybe in certain areas sure.. I had an easier time 5-6 years ago while UNEMPLOYED looking for work truth be told.
Now I can't even get my foot in the door for a measly interview. I think a lot of this "everything is great" is nothing by window dressing

It's cheaper to have salaried staff stay late than it is to hire hourly workers and pay them a livable wage. I see this at my work. We have a revolving door of part timers. The salaried bosses end up having to put in 70-80 hour weeks and are paid only for 42 hours. Not only do the bosses have to do their own work, but they also have to do the work of the part timers that constantly call off, don't show up, or are totally useless when they do show up.
