I haven't worked because of social anxiety and partially because of laziness. I'm living with my parents. As far as I see it I can't afford to be honest with future employers or people I meet. The truth is too embarrassing. I may be honest if for some reason I get close to someone. I'll take advice on where do I begin in terms of making money. Also on what do I tell people. I wish things didn't come to this but my choices have led me to where I am today. I wish I didn't had to lie but for now that's my only option.

I think that you're going to need to do a lot of work on yourself through professional therapy before you solve this problem. What's held you back this long is only going to catch up with you once you land a job. Fix the source of these problems first.

Any respectable company is going to conduct some sort of basic background check. In today's world of background checking and data/information brokers, lies are more easily discovered. Whereas a company may accept an honest explanation and make a positive or negative decision based on it, lies that are discovered usually ends negatively no matter what.

Of course, in many "new thinking employment sectors" claiming an alien abduction for those years may get you an offer as Senior Vice President of Extraterrestrial Marketing and Outreach.

It would be helpful to know what you HAVE been doing with the time.

Personally, I view a year of unemployment as equivalent to a year of retirement, so ... hope you enjoyed it!

I definitely would have some suggestions, but you'd have to say a bit more about you've been doing and your limitations.

I know some guys who absolutely cannot do difficult, corporate jobs and it's kind of worked out to their advantage as they've by necessity, been able to work themselves into easier jobs that pay well ... eventually.

But even those guys, they are able to show up on time every day. You need to be able to do that.

How much longer can your parents take care of you?

I just assume it would be hard for you to find a spouse who can take care of you. Because I know people who have gone that route too.

If OP is trying to find a job, they're definitely going to have to have a statement prepared for a sporadic job history. Don't lie, because they're going to check, but they want to know that you will show up and do the job and not flake out and make excuses. And if you do have a legit anxiety diagnosis, that's something that there can be ADA accommodations for, but you need to know how and when to disclose that.

Back in June, 1944. A bunch of 18 yr old stormed the beaches of Omaha, Utah, Juno, etc. facing flying bullets from the machine guns. Many sacrificed but as result, it was the beginning of the U.S. victory in WW-II. Were they scare? Did they have Anxiety? you bet! But they marched on because of the sense of duty.

Social anxiety? Were you medically diagnosed? Otherwise, it sounds like a bunch of excuses to me. IMO, you had too comfortable life living with Mom & Dad. You've became soft & lazy. The best thing your parent can do is to kick you out of the house, then you have to go get a job.

Nothing like the need for money gives you the motivation you'll need. The motivation such as getting to work on time, complete the tasks assigned, and say "yes sir/ma'am".

If you lie just to get a job. You'll be fired in no time because of your laziness.

Do yourself a favor, go join the Army and let them shake the "social anxiety" out of you!

For the most part I haven't been productive. Most of my time has been spent online, YouTube, video games, etc. I've decided to turn my life around and start being pro active. I think they'll probably keep taking care of me but I'd rather start taking steps towards being independent now rather than all of a sudden.

This is good. Do you start your day with exercise? I think physical well-being is often intertwined with mental well-being. If you feel good physically, you tend to feel better mentally and emotionally.

I think most if not all employers would reject me if I were to be honest.

I'm starting to exercise focusing on getting strong since my arms are about the same size as when I was teenager
