I work at a school as a Teacher and am always noticing that most new hires are "kids" in their early 20s. I see many applicants come into the Principal's Office for an interview that are over 40 but rarely are they hired. Some are looking at teaching as a second profession and others come from other communities. Both have to be twice as good to be considered. The older applicants are rarely hired.

At my wife's employer, a few applicants sneak into interviews by indicating they are younger by only listing the last ten years of experience on their resume. Though once they arrive in the office for the interview, they are quickly dispatched after the minimum amount of time. My wife says according to a friend in payroll, no one has been hired over 50 in the last few years. They have hired hundreds of people. And the few times that they were hired it was for executive positions.

Does your organization hire older workers for non executive positions?

Yes, the law firm where I work does. I know of two people, one age 72 and one age 64 who were both hired 3 years ago.

My employer did but it is common. I personally thnik it is because as peole get older they cost more to insure as they have on average more medical problems. But then many avoid those under 25 because they tend to abuse sick leave more and women with child also have more absnteeism. If you can prove tha is the bases of course you can sue;but it isn't easy and many times people are wrong because not all so it. I know many times they are looking for a person out of college that can advance over a length of time. Most at 55 would like work 10-15 years.Reality

Also, people over 55 have more experience and would like to be paid more money. A company can hire a 35 year old for $25K less.

well, I am an unemployed Health & Physical Education teacher (15 years experience) and have just turned 60 years of age. Even though I have completed a Masters in Education (Physical Education) (obtaining good results) in (graduated Sept 30, 2012 last year), do have three good references and do have full registration with the Qld college of teachers, I cannot secure work back as a teacher.

Both Centrelink and the Job Network/Service providers do nothing to help me find work and require me to do no work experience or volunteer work. I had said that I would do an apprenticeship but was laughed at. I said I would do some work experience for nothing if there was a full-time job at the end of it. I indicated that I would do admin type work if the Ed Qld were not hiring over 55 year olds.

It is so difficult living in Australia when you are over 55 years of age. If I do not get work, I will have no superannuation left at 65 years of age. Here I am, fit and healthy with the right attitude to continue teaching and cannot secure work back teaching with Ed Qld. Moreover, the monies owed the Gillard Government for doing the Masters degree will never be paid back through the tax system unless I secure fulltime work back teaching.

Yes it does. About half of our employees are over 50, including one who is nearing retirement and in his 70's. We have hired two workers in the past 6 months who looked to be over 50. Of course, I did not ask what age they were... Unfortunately, neither one lasted more than a couple weeks at the company.
