Ah, but that's only because you're not living on $20K. It doesn't matter how much you actually make, it's how you spend that's more important.
If you were living on $100,000 a year, and suddenly got a $50K a year increase, would you start SAVING the $50K, or increase your standard of living? Because, obviously, you COULD live on just $100K a year.
By the same token, I'm doing just fine on $20K a year, so $100K is WEALTHY. It's five times my own income, and I'm doing just fine.
When it comes to taxes, it is ALL about what you spend.
And do you actually make six figures doing that kind of work? No. The ones who WORK don't get paid well.
I think what's going on here is that you're equating "real work" with manual labor. Listen...I've done construction work. It's nowhere near as physically, mentally, and emotionally as taxing as what I do now. So, yeah...I do WORK.
I think I work pretty darn hard. I put in significantly more than 8 hours a day at work, and I often put in extra hours at nights and on weekends answering email and doing research. A lot of my co-workers do the same. Yet we work for state government, and will never make big bucks. I know a lot of folks who work just as hard or even harder, some of them at jobs that entail manual labor, yet will never make more than $30,000 or $40,000 a year. So why are some careers valued so much more than others? Do the people in those jobs really work harder than the average person?

Thinking work isn't work to me. It comes naturally.
Just because some people choose NOT to do so, doesn't mean I can't be happy. I do what I'M supposed to.
And what would that be??? What do you do that is so hard???
