That many of the job listings you apply to and interviews that you go may be for nothing because almost every employer post ads for job that are not vacant and fills positions through employee referrals. So the interview that you are may not matter because they already have selected the person for that position.
This has always been the case, well at least for the last 10 years since I graduated college but that doesn't mean that every single ad is worthless. That is the reason why networking is SO very important.

I now see why it was important to have a good working relationship with everyone when I first got into this field. But I would chose to only talk to certain people like I was still in highschool
The TVSOAPOPERAguy strikes again, and he has Mommy issues!? Why doesnt that surprise me. Companies post ads per the EEOC guidelines first of all, they have to give everybody equal opportunity chance. Especially companies that have anything to do with federal funding or certain types of contracts. So when a job opening is available, even if they have a good idea they are going to fill it from within, two things, one they post it to meet the EEOC guidelines, and two, they just might find someone out there that actually is a better fit for the job. Miracles have happened. Most times its the first. TVSoapoperaguy, how did you get to be 33 and not know anything? Just sitting in front of the TV and believing that was life, or thinking you would never be anything more than what you were. No wonder the world is where its at, we have people that can't think outside the box, and by the box, I mean the XBOX, the Gamecube, the Nintendo, and the TV. Some people haven't left their house since they got out of college to experience the real world and really know what is going on.
PS. You don't think its odd that your Mommy is talking to You about jobs and unemployment? Has she ever done that before? Hmm, I'll bet she knows and is trying to manipulate you into telling her, so she can tell you, "I knew it" You been sitting at home all day watching those Soap Operas and not working, not coming over to see your poor Momma, you could be spending those days with me, helping me here, you're such a bad son, ohhhh the guilt, the guilt, the guilllllllllttttttttt.......

I don't know about the interview part but I have responded to a few ads where the person on the other end told me that the position has already been filled and that the newspaper, website, etc. hasn't stopped running their ad yet.
If an employer conducts an interview then that means that there is a position open or that they anticipate that one will be open soon.
To state the obvious, job hunting is a numbers game. To improve YOUR odds you MUST network. There are many jobs out there that are NEVER posted.
There are other jobs that are created within a company because someone, who is in a position to do so, believes that you will be an asset to the company. I have seen this happen numerous times. Someone is brought into a company at a great salary simply because of who they KNEW.
Stay positive, keep an open mind, go to many networking events and don't be afraid to let people knew what you are great at doing.
