I didn't want to hijack another's thread- but wanted to share this and hear others' stories.

After I had been on a new job for three weeks, HR came to my door and said that I was being given the rest of the day off. I was neck-deep in a project and thought that they did this for office morale, so thanked him and told him that I had to finish the project, so to offer it so someone else.

"No, I've been asked to give you the afternoon off." When he saw my face, he said, "Oh, don't worry, you're not being fired or anything." I asked if I could just shut my door and finish my project and was told, "No, you need to leave now."

So I left. Our secretary was not at her desk when I left. The next day we discovered that they fired our boss! I left three months later- gave two weeks written notice and was escorted out within 20 minutes! Was told to return at 8:30 the next morning and when I entered the property (had to be buzzed in, as they took my security badge the day before), I didn't even have a chance to get out of my car- they came out with a cart full of my belongings! They were just bad people and so, expected others to be bad, as well.

My former boss and I are still in touch- several years later. Both in better positions.

In today's workplace, you can get fired for EVERYTHING! Even if the firing is not justified, the employer has everything documented to mess yourr life up, and prey on the innocent like you and me. It stinks being fired, you have to ask for government help, and ask your family to help which is a godsend, but it does make you feel embarassed. At least you still have a connection going with your former boss, unlike me where the boss let's me go and forgets about me after I get that last paycheck.

Once I had to ask someone to leave- we ended up crying and hugging and she resigned. We were friends before and still are- but only in touch once in a while as I have moved. I could never cut it as an HR person.

I just got my unemployment hearing date after being fired on Dec 2nd. You can't believe some of the crap they said. I think I have a good chance of receiving benefits. Using emails I sent to the accountant but leaving out some!!
Accusing me of things the owner did all the time. Since there was no communication I was "following suit", so to speak!!

I barely had time to gather my stuff as this woman, whom I had no idea what her position was (other than the owner's wife), yelling at me to "get the hell out!!"

Weird stuff. WILL NOT EVER WORK FOR A FAMILY OWNED COMPANY AGAIN!! SCARRRRRYYYY!!!!

I came back from lunch...tried to log in to my computer and found I wasn't started up by my supervisor.
My supervisor then told me to go to the head of HR's office...which I did.
Blah blah blah...
termination...

I turned in my badge and left for the night.
I then went home and applied for 3 other jobs...received a call about an interview the next day...
I was fired on a Friday and hired for a new job on Monday.

I found out later that they fired another supervisor and it was over something very stupid, similar to the reason they fired me (I wasn't "pleasant" enough over the phone...)

I am now grateful to have been terminated. Had I stayed on until the company finally closed down the call center...I would have never found the job I had now. I was one of the last people they are hiring for now. Who knows how my luck would have been a month or so later...

I was never fired, but I did have one very short job. I was thrilled to get hired by the large corporation my father had worked for many years. I thought my future was set, and I would work there forever and retire there.
I took a physical for the job and passed it hands down. They had medical facilities at the plant, but they didn't have X-ray equipment, so they gave me a chit to go to a local clinic for the back X-ray.
I reported to work the next day, met all the guys, got the tour, had my first coffee break, and after about three hours got notified to report to HR.
The results from the back x-ray came back, and showed something that might possibly cause a problem down the line, so I was dismissed and sent home, one very sad lad...
That was 40 years ago, and I have abused my body and back in every way possible for all of those years, and still haven't encountered the back problem they forsaw....
As all things sad, it worked out for the best in the long run. That company moved out of state, and I got a goverment job a couple of miles fom my home...

Livetoday and Don-

Isn't it something how what we think is a bad thing often turns out, in the long run, to be the best thing? It's hard to remember that during the rough times when we are being fired, layed off, are unemployed, or not hired for the dream job, etc.

I guess the moral of the story is to get up, dust off and keep going. And when you can't get up, let others prop you up while you fake it until you can.

I think that is solid advice. I work for a bank in NYC so you can imagine how my world is. But last year, I was in a job that I hated and working with some people I don't like. I started to look for a new job, but wound up getting laid off instead. I had mixed reactions cause I never got laid off before, but then again felt relieved cause I hated the job. I found another job about 3 months later with a more stable bank and like what I do now and like the people I work with. My former company has been sold and my old team was broken up. Although it was a shock to my ego, I realized I would not have landed my current job if I didn't get laid off from my previous one. Life does work in funny ways sometimes...

I worked for a family owned business as well, and yes there is a lot of swindling going on in there. And if something goes wrong, they go after the innocent guy, the guy that NEVER got a write up in his/her whole career, and FIRES them. So as another person that once worked for a family owned business, unless you are a brother, sister, or an uncle of the company owner. DO NOT WORK FOR ANY FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS!

Back in the days before college I had quite the history...

Would you count Temp jobs?

I worked in a plastic company in Downtown Kansas City once in which a job they gave me was dangerous. I was there about two weeks when they moved me over to the bandsaw. They gave me some very small pieces to cut, and having been pretty good at Shop in highschool (and at that time, pretty fresh out), I knew this was dangerious and would have called for a smaller tool. I told them that I didn't feel comfortable doing it and therefore wouldn't.

Their response? "You don't have a choice." I certainly did. I walked right out of there. I know it is a quitting thing, but they saw it as letting me go (according to the temp agency the next day).

I also got fired from a union job for missing too many days. Low seniority mixed with a policy of mandatory overtime and a busy social life (I was young, it seems overly important). Everybody, and I mean everybody played with their point system. You get so many points you use to turn down mandatory overtime or use as sick days/personal days, and you get half a point back every month.

I used a half a point too much. My accounting methods were flawed it seems. So they let me go. Walked me out, took my gloves and badge (gloves?? lol).

When I was 15 1/2 I was let go from McDonalds for not being "McDonalds quality material".

Huh, talk about an ego killer.
