Now let me say I know it's incredibly difficult to find work right now and some folks are using odd and unusual methods to gain a prospective employers attention but please do not do what this person did today.....I work for an IT company and someone called into our work group demanding we connect them with our HR department as if they were a paying customer having an issue that required immediate action...After they were referred to our website and given directions on how to apply for employment they then insisted to speak with a Manager. At that point I took the call and explained (again) what they need to do if they are interested in a job. This person just did not get it and called me a bad name and hung up....This is a surefire way to kill any chance they might have had if, say, their qualifications were a good match for a potential job but I decided to inform HR not to give them any consideration should their resume arrive on the desk of an HR manager...Be thoughtful and think about the approach...
Maybe he should sue you (or his college, whoever is an easier target) because you didn't coddle him and drop everything you are doing to cater to his demands. It would also be nice if you would roll out the red carpet for his interview. He is obviously a very talented person and should be given a nice raise on day 2 of employment.
Sometimes people needs a seminar on what are the right approach in inquiring.
We just don't know how he viewed his character. One day,he will realized it.
Nowadays, with the rampant use of drugs, and other thing that will alter one's senses, we need to understand that it will not be unusual to see people acting this way.
Just give them the benefit of the doubt.
If I am the one who answer that guy, I will politely tell him, the right way to do.Maybe give him an unsolicited advise?
I'd add appearance and how one approaches/carries themselves around front-end desk folks (if this applies). I've seen people who dropped off apps and resumes that, after seeing them in person, would never consider hiring them, based on appearance and sometimes how they treat front desk folks.
Another one is the "whizz quiz", as we used to say in the service. Although this has been discussed in another thread, I can't stress enough how important it is for folks to exercise self control in this case, even in good times. In this economy we're still getting folks who fail AFTER we ask them if they'll be able to pass (some say no, and they are told "Have a nice day, come back some other time"). The whizz quiz costs us a lot of money, so when someone fails, we've wasted untold hours screening the person before they're called in for an interview, then if they make it to the 2nd interview yet afterwards the applicant fails, we've wasted untold man-hours and resources on just one person (multiply this by many times over the course of a year, and we only have about a 450 person operation). I'd say 50%+ fail.
Folks who fail do not even get a return phone call for employment for a min. of one year and, quite frankly, I wouldn't want more druggies in manufacturing (we already have enough in this country). I don't mind the person who might occasionally "smoke", that doesn't bother me. What bothers me is we have people in this country who, even before the s**t storm hit last year, were having a "time" dealing with reality, so the chronic pot smoker and prescription drug abuser need not apply. Smoking pot 4 times a day is a problem, and I've caught people doing it on company time at other places I've worked (in New York State).
Yeah, the phone call is always classic. Some gruff lady or dude on the other end, "YOU HIRIN'????". I've done, maybe, two cold calls on jobs and politely asked if the place was hiring and/or if it was OK to drop off my resume (this was a while back). How some folks can have an attitude right off the bat is beyond me. All they have to do is e-mail a resume, and most of the time we call back within two business days. As much as I don't like temp agencies, maybe these companies are using them for OK reasons, as in "weed out the weirdos".
