Two reasons for that:

1) It's attorneys

2) It's Washington DC, which IMO has some of the nastiest, most pretentious people in the country.

It isn't just law. I worked at an accounting firm that had some pretty nasty people in management. There are loads of toxic people in all sorts of fields. They act like complete ass holes because they CAN. The key IMO is to get into a niche field where you can tell your crappy boss to go to hell and you will be able to find another job within a week or two.
