Clearance is only good if you happen to live in DC metro area, or you only want to focus on federal government work. Outside of that in commercial/private industries, clearance means nothing.

I've never worked in DC, but have worked in positions that were connected to government and have required several clearances, many of these with private companies that contracted for the federal government.

This is not true. There are lots of Defense Contractors in other states, and their jobs require being cleared.
